County launches website to track progress of Causeway project

On Sept. 21, the city of Sanibel reported that it received from Lee County updated communications related to the Shoreline Stabilization Project currently underway on Sanibel Causeway Island B.
The project addresses chronic erosion of the San Carlos Bay and Pine Island Sound shorelines of the causeway. It consists of clearing exotic vegetation along the shoreline, excavating some existing stone which will be reused, placement of new beach sand and construction of T-groins — a structure that is built perpendicular to the shoreline and is used to capture sand preventing it from eroding off the beach.
The contractor will work first on the Pine Island Sound side of the island then move to the San Carlos Bay side of the island. Areas of Island B will be restricted during construction of the project.
The project is expected to be complete by the spring of 2022.
