During the Nov. 8 meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club, nationally recognized beachcomber Dr. Ashley Oliphant will focus on how to read winds and currents to find beach treasures in Florida and beyond. Oliphant will also provide strategies for finding shark teeth and shells, and discuss sea beans, where they originate, why they land in America, and where the best ones can be found. Her presentation will include ample time for audience questions.

Oliphant is a retired full professor of English. She travels all over the United States offering interactive shark tooth and seashell workshops for children and adults. She is the author of seven books.

The meeting will be held at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Road, on Sanibel. A silent auction will be held from 1:30-1:55 p.m. in the Osprey Room, and the meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the Pelican Room. All meetings are free and open to the public.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club awards grants from the proceeds of its annual shell show that will be held March 4 – 6, 2027, at the Sanibel Community House. Grants are given towards education and research in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as for conservation and water quality projects, primarily in Southwest Florida.
