The Oct. 11 meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club will feature longtime club member Dr. Jose’ H. Leal, who is the science director and curator of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium.

The topic will address what’s new at the National Shell Museum and Aquarium. He will discuss some of the most exciting recent developments, including new research, upcoming temporary exhibits, informal education, lectures, public programs, and his own busy plans for after-retirement activities.

The meeting will be held at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel Captiva Road. A silent auction will be held from 1:30-1:55 p.m. in the Osprey Room, and the meeting begins at 2 p.m. in the Pelican Room. All meetings are free and open to the public.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club awards grants from the proceeds of its annual shell show that will be held March 4 – 6, 2027, at the Sanibel Community House. Grants are given towards education and research in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as for conservation and water quality projects, primarily in Southwest Florida.
