Alliance for the Arts, Lee County Port Authority present ‘Art In Flight’

Lee County Alliance for the Arts, a non-profit organization, continues its partnership with Lee County Port Authority as they bring art to public spaces at Southwest Florida International Airport, with the “Art In Flight” program.
The program was established in 2010, for the purpose of showcasing the diversity of art, culture and community within the Southwest Florida Region. Three exhibits are currently on display throughout the airport and feature both visual artwork and historical artifacts, highlighting the life and culture within the local community.
Current exhibits include, “Remembrance of 9-11,” an 18′ x 10′ American flag commemorating and honoring those who lost their lives and conducted rescue efforts on Sept. 11, by Sanibel gallery owner Leoma Lovegrove, and “Turn, Turn, Turn: The Artistic Synthesis of Vinyl into Art,” artwork comprised of 60,000 vinyl records and album covers donated by Captiva artist Rene Miville and composed by the group effort of 30 artists of South Florida. Both exhibits demonstrate a unique flare, creativity and patriotic appreciation to all who pass through the airport and will be on display throughout the year.
Historically representative of Southwest Florida, the exhibit, “Children of the Everglades” will be on display through June 2013. This exhibit includes photographs and documents that provide a unique portrayal and inside view of the life, culture and relationship between the son of a turn-of-the-century Fort Myers doctor, W. Stanley Hanson, better known as “White Medicine Man” and the Seminole-Miccosukee Indians.
Participation in the “Art In Flight” program and the opportunity to submit an exhibit are free and available to local and regional cultural organizations, individual artists and collectors. Selected artwork and artifacts of public interest portray artistic merit, cultural significance or educational value.
