Sanibel’s 8-Ball Pool League to begin play with eight teams

2 min read

The Sanibel 8-Ball Pool League will start its 21-week season on Monday, Oct. 24.

This year, the League will have eight teams playing on the two tables at American Legion Post 123 and two additional tables at George & Wendy’s Corner Grill. Now in its fifth year, the League began with six teams and dropped to four teams after two years because Sanibel then had only two tables available for play. In its first four years, the League had almost 100 shooters compete in League contests.

Play starts at 6 p.m. with four players from each team playing four matches. The season ends on Monday, March 12. On the following two Monday nights, a blind draw tournament and a seeded tournament will be run at the Legion and at George & Wendy’s. On April 2, the two tournament champions will play off at George & Wendy’s followed by an annual awards banquet.

League teams this year are:

Odd Balls Captain Kip Buntrock

Sanibel Cafe Captain Richard McCurry

Fresh Legion Crew Captain Gator Gates

Bathroom Magic Captain Dennis Bender

Bunt’s Ball Busters Captain Bob Buntrock

George & Wendy’s Captain Barret Anding

Carol’s Cues Captain Carol Johnson

There is also an eighth team, whose name and captain will be named by Oct. 24.

In a somewhat futile effort to unseat the three-time League Champion Bunt’s Ball Busters, several teams have loaded up. Captain Kip Buntrock recruited most of the top players from last year to form the Odd Balls. Captain Dennis Bender has recruited throughout Florida to put his Bathroom Magic shooters into a position to flush the champs down the sewer.

Spectators are welcome at all the matches. If you want to get in on the action, call League Organizer Bob Buntrock at 274-7881 or e-mail him at bobbuntrock@comcast.net. He’ll steer you to the team most in need of your cue prowess.
