If you are a Cribbage player here’s your chance to be crowned Sanibel/Captiva’s Cribbage “Champion of Champions.”

Three Cribbage mini-tournaments will be run on three consecutive Monday nights – April 4, 11 and 18 at American Legion Post 123. Sign up starts at 5:30 p.m. and matches begin at 6 p.m. Entry fee for each night is $5. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three weekly winners, with 50 percent of the pot going to first place, 30 percent to second place, 10 percent to third place and 10 percent held back for a final tournament on April 25. The tournaments are open to the public to play… or kibbitz.

Each player will play five games of Cribbage in the mini-tournaments with opponents selected by blind draw.

On Monday, April 25 starting at 6 p.m., all the winners from the four mini-tournaments will meet in a round-robin tournament to determine the island’s Cribbage Champion of Champions for 2011. Again, the entry fee will be $5 with the top three places paid 60, 30 and 10 percent, respectively.

You can contact American Legion Post member and tournament organizer Bob Buntrock at 274-7881 or send an e-mail to bobbuntrock@comcast.net with any questions or to indicate your interest in competing. Or, just show up at Post 123, located at 4249 Sanibel-Captiva Road, at 5:45 p.m. each of the Mondays and pay your entry fee to play.

Last year’s winner of the Cribbage Champion of Champions title was Dar Rizzo, who winters at Periwinkle Park. Legion Manager Becky Skog earned second place honors and Bob Buntrock was third. Pete Mindel was fourth. John Earle took fifth and Matt Hall grabbed a miraculous sixth place. All have indicated that they will return to seek top honors for 2011.
