Dr. Koenig to share experiences with Sanibel Island Fishing Club
On Tuesday, March 9, the Sanibel Island Fishing Club will be holding it’s monthly meeting, featuring guest speaker Dr. Chris Koenig, Ph.D.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the north room of the Sanibel Island Community House, located at 2173 Periwinkle Way. The featured speaker will begin his presentation at 7 p.m. sharp. There is no admission charge for the event and the angling public is cordially invited to attend.
Dr. Koenig is a research scientist at Florida State University who specializes in reef fish ecology with an emphasis on the role of the endangered goliath grouper in these habitats. His work on goliath, gag and red grouper has led to several discoveries about the important roles these fish play in the clearing and maintenance of offshore natural ledges.
Although his emphasis is on the goliath grouper, Dr. Koenig has been involved with the establishment of marine protected zones in the northern Gulf of Mexico as well as a promoter of these zones throughout the world.
For anyone interested in the science of offshore fishing, including a better understanding of the different grouper habitats found off the waters of Sanibel and Captiva, this should be a fascinating program to attend.
Dr. Koenig will also speak briefly of the process whereby the Gulf Fisheries Commission establishes the various grouper regulations that impact all Southwest Florida anglers.
The Sanibel Island Fishing Club meets monthly through season and sponsors several group outings as well as lending support for various fishing related charities and organizations such as START, PURRE and the Sanibel Sea School.
