Power Squadron offers free boat cruise
This Saturday, Nov. 14, the Sanibel-Captiva Sail and Power Squadrn is offering a free two-hour afternoon cruise from Sanibel Harbour Yacht Club.
The cruise will help boaters find their way around San Carlos Bay, up into the Intercoastal Waterway to the entrance of the Matlacha Channel, across to Tarpon Bay and under the Sanibel Causeway towards Fort Myers Beach.
The program is designed for boaters new to the area, new boaters and as a refresher for local boaters. It is worthwhile to you whether you paddle, sail, power or use personal water craft.
At the start of the cruise, a review of the cruise boat’s safety equipment will be given. Then you’ll be off with an explanation by the boat’s captain, and the Sanibel Emergency Rescue and Assistance Team (SERAT) leader identifying channels, markers and buoys, and places to avoid if you don’t wish to go aground.
You will also find out when “red light return” is wrong. The intersection of channels can be a challenge if you pick the wrong channel markers at the intersection (you could run aground). Also, special markers for speed control (manatees) are identified. You will see an actual range marker. Navigation rules of the road are mentioned so you can avoid collisions.
After this orientation, you are at a good starting point to take your own vessel cruising or going to a marina, bistro or friend’s home.
Upon completin of the cruise, there will be a free party at the Sanibel Harbour Yacht Club. Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. This is your chance to meet other local boaters to get questions answered and to make new boating friends.
To participate or for more information or specific timeline of the cruise, call Jeanne Mallon at 395-3299 or Joanne Heroy-Giller at 590-0735.
