Mahler takes second in casting competition
Joe Mahler, president of the Sanibel Fly Fishers club, recently won second place in the adult division at The Sunshine State Casting Club/American Casting Association competition in Orlando, Fla. It was the group’s first Florida-wide fly casting competition and was conducted at the Federation of Fly Fishers Florida conclave.
The three-hour event consisted of using a 5-weight outfit to target a series of double hoops in sucession and making several distance casts in a span of five minutes.
Walt Hoover of Boca Raton, Fla. took first place. The distance title went to Eric Cook of Marietta, Ga.
Mahler said the event was “a lot like square dancing.”
“The ones out there doing it are having the most fun,” he added.
The Sunshine State Casting Club is headquartered in Ruskin, Fla.
