Seeking answer to solve mystery fish riddle
Sally Hodgkins contacted the Island Reporter last week with a perplexing question: What kind of fish did we catch?
“My fiance and I were at the beach off Bailey Road on Sanibel on Saturday, Aug. 15. I looked in the water and floating was something that we had never seen before. What was this strange thing I had found? It looked alien-like. All the years of visiting and living on Sanibel, I had never seen anything like it.
“We took it to Tarpon Bay Explorers. They were just as perplexed as us. They looked on the Internet and kind of narrowed it down to a type of batfish. None of us were really sure; they were very helpful nonetheless. Thanks guys!
“Checking on the Internet, I think it is a polkadot batfish. Not really sure though. As you can see, two legs on the bottom and the top looks like a toad or bat. Maybe someone knows for sure what this fish is – we have it preserved in alcohol just in case. Would love to find out!”
