‘British Invasion’ of Sanibel’s soccer fields enjoyed by all
Neon was the color of the week at the Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp on Sanibel last week. The coaches were outfitted in bright neon jerseys, many of the players were wearing the same jerseys and every participant received a bright neon soccer ball.
Fifty-five players from age 4 through 15 participated. This was the fourth year in a row that Sanibel Youth Soccer and Challenger Sports had offered the week long camp. Challenger is the largest soccer company in the US and runs more than 2,000 camps throughout the U.S. each summer.
The highlight of the week, as always, was the World Cup on the final day of camp. Scarlet Price arrived with the flag of England painted on her face while the Thomas girls sported green hair for Brazil. Additional points were given for the largest and smallest country flags as well as for researching facts about the culture and heritage of each country.
Special thanks go out to the Paul, Holston and Williams families for each hosting a coach, to the Rothwells who took the coaches boating one afternoon and to Sweet Melissa’s for a fantastic dinner the final night.
The Challenger British Soccer Camp will return to Sanibel again next summer. Dates will be announced in early January. Registration for the fall Sanibel Youth Soccer season will begin in mid-July. For further information, visit www.sanibelsoccer.org or www.challengersports.com.
