Jones, Maiz offer body/mind sessions ‘Sleep, Stress & Your Need For Rest’

3 min read

Can’t get there? Can’t stay there? Can’t get enough or getting too much at the wrong time?

In this fastpaced and fast-changing culture, it is often difficult to acknowledge and fulfill our requirements for non-action. Besides the destructive demand that constant action places on our body/mind, time is needed for repair, regeneration and for consolidation of memories and learning. Chronic lack of regenerative rest leads to many psychological and biological health consequences. Bad things that can cost a lot of money… and then kill you!

Often, rest is considered a luxury or a waste of time. Or misunderstandings about rest and sleep lead to habits that actually disrupt the ability to restore and repair. Consequentially, specific skills need to be learned and practiced that will encourage the body/mind’s innate ability to rest and refresh.

On Sunday. April 26 from noon to 4 p.m., Gini Jones and Holly Maiz will return to the Sanibel Fitness Center on Rabbit Road for another Experiential/Educational Workshop in the Secret Signals series. “Sleep, Stress & Your Need For Rest” will explore the inter-relationship between biology and psychology in the pursuit of optimal health.

The goal of each of the Secret Signals workshops is to provide participants with both subjective and objective knowledge about themselves that can facilitate healthy changes. By investigating the body’s hidden wisdom in this seminar, participants will:

Review research on rest, sleep, and rejuvenation

Take practical tools home to use for support in the future

Experience somatic (body) awareness

Explore the autonomic nervous system

Learn the biological, and evolutionary basis of behaviors

Develop the ability to anticipate obstacles to change

Gain tools to consciously challenge habitual behaviors

Learn to relax and have fun

Future workshops include the following topics:

Creativity

Anxiety and panic attacks

Grief

Joy

Optimal aging

Gender specific issues

Spirituality and biology

Relationships

Other topics which we haven’t yet thought of (or you have not yet suggested!)

Psychotherapists Holly Maiz and Gini Jones bring different but complimentary perspectives to their understanding of what you need to know about your biology and psychology to make successful life-style changes. Before training as psychotherapists, Maiz was a dancer and Jones was a biology teacher. They started creating workshops when they realized how much they could learn from each other and how much fun it could be!

Holly is a bodymind psychotherapist with specialties in addiction, eating disorders and optimal aging. Her Web site is www.BodyMindWellBeing.com. On Sanibel, she teaches both privately and in group settings.
