‘Ding’ cartoon of the month

REFUGE/DDWS
On Dec. 9, 1931, Pulitzer-winning editorial cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling published “The Christmas Touch” in the Des Moines Register in the midst of the Great Depression. Many of Darling’s Christmas-time cartoons reflected the joy and goodwill of the season, but here he makes a political point, depicting Miss Democracy and a patched-up Uncle Sam. Darling saw to the creation of the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945 — later named in his honor — and was a strong proponent for conservation throughout his 50-year newspaper career. The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge owns the copyright of the “Ding” Darling cartoons.
