(Nonagenarian Blues)

I can remember when remember was,

Remember when forgot was not at all,

When present rolled unrolled in panorama

Past tomorrows still too young to come.

Then all of love was all we had to live

And all of life was all we had to love,

And every stop would start a new forever

And no forever ever dared to stop.

But now there’s only Once … a thousand times

Told over and over as time slows on,

While one-way nostalgia rutted with cliché

Remembers what was not in right of way,

Detours past future into presents gone

And makes each moment duller than before.
