Florida may be teased about the average age of its population being slightly older than that of other states, however, its locals and snowbirds are still extremely active and have a true love of learning. The FGCU Academy certainly fits that need.

Director John Guerra shared information about the programs and trips that the life-long learning academy provides, as well as some information about Florida Gulf Coast University. FGCU is home to 15,000 students on an 800-acre campus. Founded in 1991, it has 63 undergraduate degrees, 25 master degrees and the doctoral degrees.

The FGCU Academy was founded in 2001 for adults, seniors and retirees under the premise that learning should never cease and encourages learning for the joy of learning with friends, neighbors and peers. It offers lectures, short courses, day trips, computer classes, film series, discussion and debate groups, life enrichment and travel programs. The programs are open to all with in-person and online offerings. There were more than 12,000 participants last year and classes are usually 90-120 minutes, with no exams, grades or homework.
