Chance to serve on the CEPD commission
At our June board meeting, Commissioner Dave Jensen submitted his formal resignation, effective Sept. 27, after having served for 25 years on our board of commissioners.
The Captiva Erosion Prevention District is governed by an elected board of five commissioners, each of whom is a qualified elector residing within the district. This is a non-partisan office.
WHY BECOME A COMMISSIONER?
– Because you are community-oriented.
– Because you care about preserving and sustaining the environment.
– Because you recognize the benefits beach renourishment brings to both the community and your property.
– Because you want to make sure Captiva is a viable and thriving community well into the future.
HOW TO BECOME A COMMISSIONER?
There are two ways to become a commissioner – elected or appointed.
1) ELECTED
– You must be a registered Captiva voter residing within the district.
– You are elected by the qualified electors residing within the district.
– Positions come up for election every two years.
2) APPOINTED
– If a vacancy occurs on the board due to the resignation, death or removal of a board member, the remaining members may appoint a qualified person to fill out the remainder of the unexpired term.
– You must be a registered Captiva voter residing within the district.
WHAT IS EXPECTED OF A COMMISSIONER?
– Attend the monthly board meeting.
– Attend the weekly briefing meeting if possible. They are often canceled and are not mandatory; briefing meetings may be canceled if no quorum exists.
– Vote on every motion in which there is no personal interest.
– Request items be placed on the meeting agenda, introduce motions and resolutions, and discuss subjects.
– Attend CEPD public hearings, emergency meetings and special meetings.
– Any commissioner can serve as an officer – chair, vice-chair, secretary or treasurer – if and when elected by the other commissioners.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
– Commissioners serve a four-year term when elected.
– Commissioners complete the term of the departing commissioner if appointed.
– Commissioners receive no compensation; they are volunteer.

– Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29: Briefing meetings at 1 p.m.
– Sept. 12: First budget hearing at 5:01 p.m.*
– Sept. 26: Board meeting at 1 p.m.
– Sept. 26: Second budget hearing at 5:01 p.m.*
– Sept. 5 and 19: Briefing meetings at 1 p.m.
– Oct. 7: Board meeting at 1 p.m.
– Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31: Briefing meetings at 1 p.m.
– Nov. 12: Board meeting at 1 p.m.
– Nov. 7, 14 and 21: Briefing meetings at 1 p.m.
– Dec. 9: Board meeting at 1 p.m.
– Dec. 5, 12, 19 and 26: Briefing meetings at 1 p.m.
*Two budget hearings are tentative and subject to change.
Board meetings are held at the South Seas Conference Center, at 5400 Plantation Road, Captiva. Briefing meetings are held at the CEPD office, at 11513 Andy Rosse Lane, Unit 4, Captiva.
