Guest commentary: Petition deadline extended by popular demand

Thank you for all you’ve done already to protect Captiva from increased building heights and density — our strong and united voices must be heard! The community partners working to protect Captiva drafted an online petition addressed to the Lee County commissioners stating our opposition to the proposed amendments harmful to Captiva and Sanibel.
– 9,754 people have signed this petition as of today, Aug. 24
– 5,915 of signers are Florida residents
– 4,971 of those are Lee County residents
Printed copies of the completed petition are being delivered to the commissioners today, Aug. 24, so they have them prior to their Aug. 29 workshop, but you still have a chance to sign it by visiting https://p2a.co/hsktrgL.
At the Aug. 29 workshop, the commissioners will discuss the proposed changes in building height and density on Captiva and the South Seas Island Resort. The meeting will be followed by public hearings on Sept. 5 and 6, where a vote on these proposals may be taken.
Our communities need to make our voices heard once again and remind the county commissioners of our opposition to these changes — and urge them to vote no.
Anyone who didn’t get a chance to sign yet can still do so. An addendum to the petition with any names added after today, Aug. 24, will be delivered to the commissioners in advance of the Sept. 5 and 6 public hearings.
Please take a moment to sign the petition. Just visit https://p2a.co/hsktrgL to access the petition, fill in the information requested, hit the submit button and your name will be added. It’s that simple.
Also, please share the link with friends and neighbors in the Captiva-Sanibel and surrounding communities who also oppose the proposed changes. Anyone can sign the petition.
