Consider mandating the wearing of masks

To the editor:

As year-round Sanibel residents and seniors, we have been pleased with the Sanibel City Council’s attempts to protect us from the COVID-19 pandemic. But now, the danger is growing rapidly and lurking at our shores.

Health experts agree that one of the best ways to reduce transmission of this monster virus is for everyone to wear a face mask. This scientific fact is irrefutable. And yet, many people do not seem to care about themselves or others.

We will not venture into any business that does not require masks for employees and customers. But many places of business do not heed this safety measure. Leaving the decision up to the customers creates an environment ripe for disputes and confusion.

If the city council would mandate the wearing of masks, it would relieve the burden on business owners. A reluctant customer could simply be told, “Wearing a mask is required by the city of Sanibel.”

Please consider this carefully. It’s a life-saving measure.
