Trump not fit to be our president
To the editor:
This week’s The Island Reporter features a story on the front page entitled “Sense of Hope Returns to Americans After Election.” Wow. Really? Because all I feel is hopelessness. We’re supposed to feel hopeful for our great nation because we elected this ridiculous man-baby to be our president? Our president. The leader of the free world, the most important man on earth, on whose shoulders balances the fate, not only of our nation, but the entire planet. Hope is not the emotion that comes to mind.
I’d like to remind you of who this man is and what he has said and done:
This is a man who started his campaign by announcing that Mexicans were murderers and rapists (oh, yeah, maybe not all), and that he would deport them all (by the way, Barack Obama has deported more criminal illegals that any other president). A man who said John McCain was not a hero because he got captured. A man who called for a ban on all Muslims. A man who declared he knew more about Isis than the generals. Has there ever been a more moronic statement in the history of mankind?
This is a man who tweeted “I told you so” after the horrific Orlando nightclub shooting, as if this horrible event was nothing more than a confirmation of his superior thinking. A man who makes fun of the disabled, who attacks a Gold Star military family, a Muslim family who lost their beloved son while he was fighting for this country, his country, and then he says he has made sacrifices too. Donald has worked very hard and built a lot of tall buildings. Yeah, that’s pretty much equal.
This is a man who attacked a highly respected federal judge, a American of Mexican heritage claiming that this man was biased against him because he had ancestors from Mexico and Donald, after all, was building a wall. Impeccable logic. Offensive and racist.
This is a man who swore he had watched on television as thousands and thousands of Muslims in Jersey City, N.J., celebrated when the twin towers collapsed. No such footage exists. Never happened. Just a blatant lie among many, many others.
This is a vulgar man who said Megyn Kelly was bleeding from “wherever,” who uses the “f” word at rallies, a misogynist who brags about grabbing a woman’s privates just because he can. And many women have come forward who can vouch for this.
This is a man who is a swindler and a con-man (Trump University), who routinely stiffs his subcontractors, and is such a good businessman that he has declared bankruptcy seven times. A man who is Vladimir Putin’s biggest fan, who declared that this tyrant (who routinely kills his opponents) was a much stronger leader than Barack Obama. How stupid is he? Putin knows how stupid he is. All he has to do is flatter Donald and bingo, Donald is in love. But Putin isn’t stupid. He knew what he was doing and he got his man elected.
This a man who encouraged the Russians to hack the Democratic Party and suggested to his supporters that perhaps the “second amendment” people could figure out what to do about Hillary.
A man who actually asked why, if we had nuclear weapons, he could not use them. (The same man who will be getting the nuclear codes come January.) This is a man who has said that he’d be
OK with Saudi Arabia acquiring nuclear weapons, and who, during a TV interview, appeared to not know that Putin had already invaded the Ukraine. The enormity of his ignorance is breathtaking. A man who refused to release his tax returns (gee, I wonder why), who is proud of his debt and is proud of his schemes to avoid paying taxes.
A man who repeatedly and sanctimoniously declared for the entire world to hear that Barack Obama was the founder of Isis. A man who professed not to know who David Duke was (my cat knows) and refused to repudiate him after he was informed. There’s a reason the Ku Klux Klan had a celebratory parade after Trump’s victory.
A man who became the “head birther,” the leader of the movement designed to belittle, demean, embarrass, and illigetimize the presidency of Barack Obama. He had a plan, though. As head birther, he was speaking to the racists, bigots, and white supremacists who had never gotten over that, “damn, how in the heck did we let a black guy be president.” They heard him, loud and clear.
But the most frightening thing about this election is that now President-elect Trump has appointed Steve Bannon as his Chief Strategist. For those that don’t know, this is the man that created the most hateful and vile internet journal, Breitbart, that routinely and proudly publishes bigoted, racist, and white supremacist views. This is reportedly a man who told his wife he didn’t want his children going to school with Jews. Nice guy. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the alt-right. They want to get rid of Paul Ryan…he’s not enough to the right for them, I guess. Mr. Bannon’s office will be right next to Trump’s. Just a hop and a skip away.
What I know is this: Americans wanted change. I know some Americans feel forgotten and ignored and are struggling to find jobs and make ends meet. I know that we are living in a scary world. But change at the expense of losing our country? At the expense of losing everything America stands for, our moral high ground, our belief that all people are created equal, and that we are a shining example to the world?
I know Hillary is flawed. She may or may not be a crook. Thirty years of Republican witch hunts and millions of tax payer dollars spent investigating her, they basically got nothing. They couldn’t indict her, couldn’t send her to prison. They’ve tried, and tried, and tried. I think they got nothing because there is nothing. No matter what you think, the fact is that she’s whip smart, a relentless worker, and has experience like no other. She would have made an excellent president.
I’m so proud and thankful to be an American. This is the greatest country in the world…always was and always will be. I am, however, profoundly ashamed and deeply embarrassed of Donald Trump. He is not fit to be our president.
