Speed bumps
To the editor:
For years, we have all been saying that we will have to do something about the traffic problem on Periwinkle.
The good news is that we will be doing something. The bad news is that we will be making the problem worse.
We are planning to put speed bumps on Albatross and Sandcastle. In other towns and cities that employed speed bumps, many drivers found them so annoying that they took parallel routes. The only parallel route to Albatross and Sandcastle is Periwinkle. Result: even more cars on Periwinkle.
It is not too late to stop this. I have asked the city council to review their decision one more time in view of new information on this matter. The men on city council are bright and dedicated people who have shown good judgement in past decisions.
Let us hope that they will conclude that speed bumps will do more harm than good and that this project will be dropped.
One further note, the Sanibel Fire Department, Police Department and ambulance service strongly oppose speed bumps because it will delay their arrival to emergency situations.
