Keep Sanibel’s local government non-partisan
To the editor:
Non-partisan local government has been an important feature of Sanibel since its founding, one that has helped to make this city a good place to live.
We were disappointed that Kevin Ruane chose to write a letter in support of Lizbeth Benacquisto on letterhead and with signature identifying himself as Mayor of Sanibel. He has every right, as a private citizen, to encourage others to support specific candidates for office, but in our opinion it is inappropriate to use the non-partisan office of Mayor of Sanibel for this purpose.
The slope towards contentious and partisan government is a slippery one. This comes closer to the edge. What’s done is done, but we hope that he steps back and thinks before stepping further.
