Thanks for our freedoms
To the editor,
As Independence Day approaches, I urge all to consider what freedom is and why it’s so important to fight for it. President Ronald Reagan said it best: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on to them to do the same.”
To me, freedom represents so many things, but most valuable of them all is the opportunity for anyone to make free choices and to live a life free from oppression. I remember members of my own family. As a Marine, I remember my Marine Corps family-at-arms that died for our country abroad. As a former Lee County Sheriff’s Lieutenant, I remember all my brothers and sisters behind the badge that have sacrificed so much and continue to do so, even if it means giving their life.
This week (and always), let us remember those who protect our rights to freedom. For those who have served and to those who continue to stand against tyranny and lawlessness, I thank you!
