To the editor,

In a “Special to the Reporter” (April 7, 2011), we learn that “More than 40 Florida municipalities have already adopted more stringent than the state rule.” It is my understanding that the state rule calls for a 10 foot maximum set back for the use of fertilizer in proximity to water ways.

The writer went on to say: “Ideally, as each community adopts similar standards, this creates a regional approach to tackling water pollution. This is exactly what has happened in Southwest Florida through local ordinaces on Sanibel, Cape Coral, Fort Myers Beach, Bonita Springs and Naples.

The above paragraph is not only misleading, it is wrong. All governmental entities in Lee County — other than Sanibel — have set back requirements of 10 feet or less. Sanibel’s set back requirement of 25 feet actually runs contrary to the writer’s so-called regional approach.
