Working beautifully
To the editor,
If it ain’t broke…
It is a tired and overused cliche, but it still makes a lot of sense. For instance, we have had sitting City Councils over the years who did not like one another, and it definitely decreased their effectiveness as a governing body. Sanibel suffered from these petty personality differences.
We now have a sitting Council for the last several years who have done a magnificent job in protecting our Island and they have great chemistry and get along real well with one another. There will still be differences and three-to-two votes, but they respect one another.
Why would any group or organization not want to endorse Mayor Mick Denham and Vice Mayor Kevin Ruane for re-election to their seats? Mick has spent many, many hours successfully protecting the quality of our waters while Kevin has been our financial watchdog, spending much time protecting our investments and creating a 2009 City budget which we all agree with and embrace. In addition, they have spent numerous hours at the Tourist Development Council, building relationships to ensure that Sanibel gets their fair share of the bed tax allocations. This has worked!
I do not think it is time to elect new candidates for their positions. In these frightening economic times, I do not think we want to bring novice candidates on the Council and then begin on-the-job-training.
I am staying with the current team on Council because it is working beautifully!
