Kudos on Periwinkle Way
To the editor,
The post-Hurricane Charley improvements on Periwinkle Way have been under way since 2005, but this fall all the restoration and improvement work seemed to have finally come together with a delightful result.
Our “main street” is now lined with native trees, shrubs and plants, which creates a uniquely Sanibel ambiance. The addition of several new lovely pocket parks this year is a wonderful enhancement. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, they provide attractive rest areas for bikers and walkers. Users of the shared use path can now more fully enjoy the Sanibel experience.
The two community parks have also been enhanced with a variety of amenities. These improvements go hand-in-hand with the 2006 City Council- initiated improvements to the Periwinkle shared use path itself, separating the road and the path with grassy buffers, making it safer as well as more attractive.
The community owes a great debt of gratitude to all those involved in making these improvements. I would especially like to recognize Sanibel Beautification, Inc., founded and led by Ada Shissler, for its visionary leadership and persistence in spearheading the community’s response through the Periwinkle Partnership. This collaboration of community organizations — Sanibel Beautification, SCCF and the Chamber of Commerce — with the City of Sanibel, has enabled the community to accomplish much more than was originally envisioned. Through contributions from many Sanibelians (donations as well as thousands of hours of volunteer effort), augmented by grant dollars to the City from several sources, this project leaves a legacy for future generations.
Kudos and thanks to all involved in this effort!
