As we gather to give thanks for our blessings, political cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling posthumously reminds us to be also thankful for our burdens, comparatively light when considering the injustices others in the world suffer. “Ding” penned “Let us be thankful for the nature of our burdens” for the Nov. 29, 1917, edition of the Des Moines Register. It was one of more than 15,000 cartoons he created during his 50 years of commentary, for which he won two Pulitzer prizes. Many of his cartoons dealt with conservation and politics, recognized as prescient and still relevant today. The “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge owns the copyright of the “Ding” Darling cartoons.
