Jean Aycock
Jean Upshaw Aycock passed away on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 at Lee Memorial Health Park in Fort Myers. She was 90.
Jean was born in the small town of Social Circle, Ga. and attended North Georgia College. She married her college sweetheart, Bob Aycock, who became a career Army officer. This gave her the opportunity to see parts of the world she never thought possible while growing up in Social Circle. She accompanied Bob on tours to Tokyo, Japan; the Philippines; and Okinawa — in addition to assignments at various Army posts in the United States.
After Bob left the Army and Washington, D.C. in 1966, the couple moved to Sanibel, where Jean lived ever since. Besides the many crafts that interested her, Jean went into business for herself, opening The Shell Net gift shop at Bailey’s Center and operating it until 1984.
Jean and Bob were consummate sightseers, always making the best of wherever they were, staying active and seeing everything in the area there was to see. She really loved to travel. Even after Bob’s retirement, they toured a good bit of the United States as well as Europe.
Jean is survived by her grandchildren — Kathy, Michael and Brian; by her niece — Sherrie Deyette of Atlanta, Ga.; and by six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, in 2005 and by her son, Robert Jr., in 2008.
Jean will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband.
