Lowell DeVasure
F. Lowell DeVasure of Sanibel died at the age of 87 on Feb. 21, 2010.
He was born in Neodesha, Kansas on Nov. 19 1922. During the Great Depression the family relocated to eastern Nebraska where Lowell grew up on a farm. He earned his BA degree at Dana College in Blair, Ne. and at Doane College in Crete, Ne. under the U.S. Navy V12 program and was commissioned an ensign at Columbia University, N.Y. He attained the rank of LT jg while serving as navigator and weather officer on a PCE based in Guam in WWII.
He returned to farming and in 1948 married Dorothy Granlund in Minneapolis. He enjoyed farming, always willing to try new methods and products and keenly aware of the role weather played. The children became involved as they grew and at times the entire family would attack weeds in corn and soybean fields. The reward for their work would be camping trips to National Parks in the Western U.S. and Canada.
On winter vacation Lowell and Dotty discovered Sanibel Island and fell in love with seashells. Eventually this led to shelling trips on many continents and islands, combined with sightseeing jaunts to many of the world’s wonders.
Lowell is survived by Dotty, his wife of 61 years, three children, Ann Buland (Pastor Rod), John, and Jane (Keith Siebrandt); 3 grandchildren, Steven Siebrandt (Tina), Shannon Schlabs (Ronnie) and Sarah Siebrandt; sister Glennis Nicolai (Art), sister-in-law Grace Granlund Anderson (Carlton) and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, March 19 at the Sanibel Community Church at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Sanibel Community Church, The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, Hope Hospice and the Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center.
