Alice Harjung
Alice Harjung of Sanibel Island passed away on Oct. 30, 2009 following a brief illness. She was 88.
Born as Alice Ann Marie Audren on Aug. 10, 1921 in Trenton, N.J., she was predeceased by her parents, Yves Audren and Marie Leguen, and two sisters, Denise Swain and Phyllis LaCarty. She is survived by her son, Kurt and daughter-in-law Anita Moyle-Harjung, several cousins and several nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends.
She was married for 53 years to the late Stephen Harjung. Following his death in 1995, she relocated in 2000 from Lawrenceville, N.J. to Sanibel. While living in New Jersey, Alice and Steve were recognized for their colorful flower gardens and she for her flair with oil and watercolor painting. She and her husband loved to travel and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. As a member of the Lawrence Historic Preservation Society, she was involved in the restoration of the Historic Brearley House, a Revolutionary War home.
While living on Sanibel, she spent much of her leisure time with her dog, Shadow. She served as a volunteer for several years at the Chamber of Commerce as a greeter and also as a docent for the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum. She worked part-time for several years at Tarpon Bay Explorers. She will be remembered fondly for her quick wit and snappy sense of humor as well as for her optimistic outlook on life.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a future time. Contributions in her memory may be made to F.I.S.H. of Sanibel or Community Housing & Resources (CHR of Sanibel).
