Kid’s All American Fishing Derby set for Saturday

3 min read

Junior anglers in Cape Coral can cast their line out to catch a day of fun at the Cape Coral Yacht Club this Saturday morning.

The 22nd annual Kid’s All American Fishing Derby takes place from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Cape Coral Yacht Club pier for youth ages 5 to 15.

“The Cape Coral Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to partner with Fish Florida to help promote conservation through education,” said Julie Staples-Peterson, senior recreation specialist for the Cape Coral Parks and Rec. Department. “We want to help make the public aware and encourage the protection of marine fisheries and coastal habitats through responsible angling. It is also very rewarding to watch young children develop a love for a sport that can provide a lifetime of joy and respect for nature.”

The derby is $8 per child, which includes angler education, bait, one hour of fishing time, awards, and continental breakfast for participants.

Fish Florida will also be giving a rod and reel to each participant.

“This is a great event for any child no matter what level of fishing they are on,” said Staples-Peterson. “If they are a beginner it is a great way to learn the basics while being surrounded by a lot of knowledgeable fisherman who are there to help because they enjoy it. If you happen to be an avid fisher it is a great way to test your skills and maybe get some pointers from our knowledgeable volunteers. Either way it’s a win-win, you are surrounded by people who love to fish so you will have fun no matter what your level.”

Up to 125 registration spots are available, thanks in part to local sponsors who help put on the event along side parks and recreation.

“We have great support from our community partnerships for this event,” Staples-Peterson said. “Fish Florida donates a rod and reel for each child signed up for the derby, up to a maximum of 125. Cape Coral West Marine has also helped out with this event for many years by providing us with lots of volunteers for this event which are priceless. Capt. Rob’s Bait and Tackle on Del Prado has also been a supportive partner in this event by donating bait and chum blocks over the years.”

The thrill of catching a fish is a special feeling for a youngster, though parents can also enjoy watching their child have a blast and even make some new fishing buddies along the way.

“Any parent enjoys watching their child experience something new or enjoys watching them doing something they love. It is a great time for parents to spend quality time with their children while having fun. It’s also a great time to socialize with other parents or make some new friends. Parents are welcome to enjoy the continental breakfast with their child for a small fee,” said Staples-Peterson.

Additional breakfast for parents is $3.

Spaces for the derby are on a first come, first serve basis.
