Shelter update as of Saturday morning
Alico Arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University opened at 10 a.m. today as a public shelter for citizens evacuating from Hurricane Irma. The Alico Arena shelter is being opened by the State of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management to support citizens needing an evacuation location.
Florida Gulf Coast University is at 10501 FGCU Boulevard South, directly off Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, in Estero, Florida.
The University echoes Governor Scott’s strongest urging for citizens to evacuate if directed by their emergency managers ahead of this very dangerous storm.

Oak Hammock Middle School
Pets are welcome at all shelters. Evacuees are reminded to bring crates or at least have pets on leashes. Germain Arena advises they do not have pet-sheltering capabilities. However, no one will be turned away from the shelter while capacity remains.
