An 8-year-old old child was transported to the hospital as a precaution Monday after her school bus was involved in a traffic crash.

No major injuries were reported.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on the first day back to school for Lee County students when a pickup truck driven by 18-year-old David McChesney Hughes, of Lehigh Acres, ran a stop sign at the intersection on Grant Boulevard and Eisenhower Boulevard, causing the front of his vehicle to collide with the left side of the bus, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The school bus came to a stop sideways in the street, with the front end of the bus on a local resident’s property.

The bus was on its way to Gateway Elementary school and, at the time of the incident, had five students on board.

One student was transported Health Park Hospital for precautionary reasons only and at the parents request, according to School District of Lee County spokesperson, Rob Spicker.
