Florida Highway Patrol Troopers have completed a lengthy criminal investigation concerning a June 27, 2018, fatal traffic crash on U.S. 41 and Tara Boulevard in Lee County, and charged a Miami man with vehicular homicide.

In the crash, Yosbel Regalado Fernandez, 31, of Miami, was driving a 2002 Freightliner ST 120 (commercial motor vehicle truck tractor trailer combination) north on U.S. 41 in the outside lane approaching the intersection of Tara Boulevard, at the entrance of the Tara Woods community in North Fort Myers. The other vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Sentra, driven by Kathy Hasley, 60, of North Fort Myers, was initially stopped on eastbound Tara Boulevard at a red traffic signal. When the eastbound traffic signal of Tara Boulevard changing from red to green, Hasley lawfully drove her Nissan into the intersection of U.S. 41.

According to the FHP investigation, Fernandez disregarded the northbound U.S. 41 traffic signal change from green to red, and, as a result, the Freightliner entered the intersection against a red signal with the front portion of the Freightliner striking the driver’s side door of the Nissan, resulting in the death of Hasley.

Today, June 21, troopers charged Fernandez for one count of vehicular homicide (a second degree felony), and two counts of reckless driving, and booked him into the Lee County Jail.
