The Lee County School Board will discuss Superintendent Dr. Greg Adkins’ evaluation today during a 9 a.m. workshop that will determine the next steps taken.

School Board Chairman Gwynetta Gittens said Friday’s workshop will include discussions about the evaluation, next-step options and what results the board wants to see going forward.

“Next steps, meaning what items we suggest we do for improvement,” she said. “No other decisions will be made.”

Evaluations were due from individual board members on April 24.

“We turned in our evaluations and then the secretary compiles them all and comes up with a grand total,” she said.

Each board member ranked Adkins in four categories. In the categories of educational leadership, professional leadership and executive leadership, there were seven items in each for the board members to rate performance. There are six items to rank in community leadership.

The highly effective scale ranking ranges from 3.250 to 4.00, the effective scale ranges from 2.500 to 3.249, the needs improvement scale ranges from 1.750 to 2.499 and the unsatisfactory scale runs from 1.000 to 1.749.

Gittens said when she did the evaluation she anguished over it quite a bit and took a long time to word everything precisely.

“My attachment is a spreadsheet showing why I scored the way I did and steps for improvement,” she said.

For educational leadership, she scored Adkins with a 2.43, a 1.57 for professional leadership, community leadership received a score of 2.67 and executive leadership had a 2.29 rating. The overall score of 2.24 has an overall rating of “needs improvement.”

“Overall I think there is room for improvement, as shown on my evaluation. I think I made it pretty clear the things I need to be improved and gave suggestions on how to improve it,” Gittens said.

Board Member Mary Fischer ranked Adkins with a 2.71 for educational leadership, 2.57 for professional leadership, 2.33 for community leadership and 2.71 for executive leadership. The overall score indicates that Adkins is “effective.”

Board Member Melisa Giovannelli ranked the superintendent with a 1.57 for educational leadership, 1.00 for professional leadership, 1.67 for community leadership and 1.43 for executive leadership. The overall score of 1.42 had an overall rating of “unsatisfactory.”

Board Member Chris Patricca ranked Adkins with a 4.00 for educational leadership, 3.71 for professional leadership, 4.00 for community leadership and 4.00 for executive leadership. The overall score of 3.93 rating of “highly effective.”

Board Member Debbie Jordan ranked Adkins with a 3.86 for educational leadership, 3.71 for professional leadership, 3.83 for community leadership and 3.86 for executive leadership. The overall score of 3.82 had a rating of “highly effective.”

Board Member Betsy Vaugh ranked Adkins with a 2.71 for educational leadership, 1.57 for professional leadership, 2.33 for community leadership and 1.86 for executive leadership. The overall score of 2.12 has an overall rating of “needs improvement.”

Board Member Cathleen O’Daniel Morgan ranked Adkins with a 3.29 for educational leadership, 3.71 for professional leadership, 3.50 for community leadership and 3.57 for executive leadership. The overall score of 3.52 indicates a rating of “highly effective.”

The overall compilation score of 2.854 rates Adkins as “effective” as a superintendent.

Adkins ranked himself with a 3.86 for educational leadership, 3.71 for professional leadership, 3.83 for community leadership and 3.86 for executive leadership.

Since she has become the chair of the board, Gittens has instituted a schedule for reviewing the agenda for their action meeting as a group prior to the meeting. The May 7 regular agenda will be discussed during the workshop.

“We will get a chance to workshop and hear from the staff and get answers there. Then our action meetings becomes action meetings. There are not as many pulls and questions at our six o’clock action meeting,” Gittens said.

The meetings are televised and taped live for those who cannot make it to the meeting, but want to listen.

“I suggest people go to BoardDocs and look at the agenda before meetings. Watch the workshop prior to the action meeting. That is where we will be discussing our rationale, what we think and get our questions answered,” Gittens said.
