Cape man charged in hit-and-run pedestrian fatality
A Cape Coral man has been charged in the hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian on May 3 in downtown Cape Coral.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, Brian Michael Ryerson, 46, of 1734 Cape Coral Parkway, was arrested Thursday, May 16, and has been charged with leaving the scene of a traffic crash involving a death, driving while license suspended with a death and tampering with physical evidence.
The CCPD investigation states that on May 3 at 6:25 a.m., Ryerson was driving a 2005 Lincoln Navigator west on Cape Coral Parkway, East, approaching the intersection of Coronado Parkway, when he struck pedestrian Gregory Moore, who was walking north across the westbound lanes of Cape Coral Parkway but not in a marked crosswalk.
Moore suffered fatal injuries as a result of the crash, and Ryerson failed to stop at the scene.
Ryerson was later identified as the driver of the Navigator, which police reported was registered to another person, and the vehicle was seized as evidence.
According to the police investigation, after hitting Moore, Ryerson proceeded to pick up a co-worker, and after dropping that co-worker off, he “recognized there was blood on the exterior of the vehicle and intentionally wiped downed the specific area in an effort to conceal the blood.”
Police said Ryerson then went to his place of work, waiting approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes before contacting the CCPD. The investigation also revealed that Ryerson had a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash — his minor child, police said.
Ryerson’s drivers license was not valid at the time of the crash and police reported he had 108 suspensions, mostly for toll violations.
After the lengthy investigation, on Thursday, Ryerson was located at 2221 N.W. 2nd Place in Cape Coral and placed under arrest. He was later transferred to the Lee County Jail.
