Stout appointed to state panel
Cape Coral City Council member Marilyn Stout will head to Tallahassee on Tuesday to begin serving a four-year term on the Florida Commission on the Status of Women.
Stout was appointed to the position by Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and approved by Gov. Rick Scott.
“I have training on Tuesday along with a meeting, a reception and dinner,” said Stout. “There are other meetings and dinners on Wednesday and Thursday, but I hope to be back in time for a function here on Thursday.”
The commission is a non-partisan panel that focuses on raising awareness and celebrating the contributions and successes of Florida women and girls through communication. It also reviews the women who are nominated for the Women’s Hall of Fame and decides which ones are selected.
“I know that is part of their duties because a few years ago I wrote a letter to them in support of a nominee,” said Stout.
The AG’s office made the first contact two months ago. Stout said she was notified by the same Bondi aide earlier this week that she was appointed.
“I did not expect this,” Stout said, “but needless to say, I’m thrilled. This happened when Bondi was running the first time and came to Lee County, and I supported her. You just never know.”
The commission also provides a collaborative platform for those seeking information on issues that affect women, girls and their families throughout the state.
“As a long-time advocate for the advancement and recognition of women, I am honored to be selected to serve on the Commission,” Stout said. “I look forward to representing our community and working with fellow commissioners in Tallahassee.”
The commission is made up of 22 members. Four each are appointed by the Governor, Speaker of the House, President of the Senate and Attorney General. The state Chief Financial Officer and Commissioner of Agriculture appoint three each. Commissioners are limited to two four-year terms.
“I will know more about the duties after next week’s meetings,” said Stout.
