Cirque Italia comes to Cape Coral this weekend

Cirque Italia, the Water Circus, will be in Cape Coral for a seven-performance, four-day engagement starting Thursday and going into Sunday.

The circus will take place at 917 Pine Island Road, on the northeast corner of Andalusia, underneath a spectacular white and blue big top tent that was made by Ferrari, the car company.

There will be single performances Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. Three shows on Saturday at 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. and two on Sunday at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Catherine Cahill, marketing director, said the circus is exceptional, as it brings more of a European style to the circus, where production and circus arts come together to create a vivid performance. There are no animals.

Manuel Rebecchi, founder and owner of the circus, comes from a long line of circus performers. He started the style of circus in Italy, Cahill said.

“He wanted to bring that style of circus to America and so he brought it here,” Cahill said.

The main feature of the two-hour performances is the “Aquatic Spectacular,” with a custom-designed water stage that travels throughout the country that holds 35,000 gallons of water. Performers dazzle over the thrusting waters while they do their work.

“The water comes up in a fountain and they perform around it. It’s kind of like a Bellagio fountain,” Cahill said. “We do not promote the use of animals, but we have a mermaid and a dinosaur.”

The tent is not easy to set up. It takes two to three days for the crew to set everything up, Cahill said. Having done it so many times, they are skilled at what they do.

Performers from around the world will be there. Jugglers, aerial acts, hand balancing, contortionists, a clown, roller skating and BMX, and other acts will put on a show they hope is unforgettable.

Cirque Italia has two different shows, the silver and gold. The silver, which will be in Cape Coral, has more basic water displays and lighting, whereas the gold has more special effects and is performed in a water curtain, Cahill said.

Ticket prices are between $10 and $50, depending on seating.
