NFM Rec Center to hold senior fair, open house
The North Fort Myers Recrea-tion Center, on 2000 North Recrea-tion Park Way, will host its first big event of 2017 Wednesday, Jan. 11, when the SHARE Club will host a Senior Health Fair and Open House from 9 a.m. to noon.
The event will feature free health screenings and medical advice from health care professionals, and seniors will get the opportunity to learn more about SHARE Club and what it has to offer seniors.
If they join, great. If not, that’s OK, too.
“Our goal is to bring people in and be able to get free screenings and see what the recreation center is about as well a SHARE Club,” said Paula Short, who runs the SHARE Club at the rec center. “The new year is coming up, and many people’s resolution is to be healthier and prevent chronic illnesses.”
The SHARE Club, a senior program offered by Lee Health (formerly Lee Memorial Health System) currently has more than 5,000 members throughout Lee County, with 2,000 per month coming into the rec center, Short said.
The SHARE Club staff will answer questions on the dozens of programs and activities it has, such as tai chi, exercise and art classes, card games, movie days and other opportunities to get yourself moving and meet new people.
The event will feature health screenings for veins, skin cancer, balance, vision, memory, glucose, blood pressure, hearing, physical therapy and chiropractic.
Health care professionals will be on hand to discuss myriad of topics including weight management, diabetes, heart health, emergency response, sleep, physical therapy, volunteer opportunities, bike and pedestrian safety, asthma, retirement living, nutrition and motivation.
Short said this event won’t be as formal. As there won’t be any special guests. It’s just the ability to answer questions about the club, of their health and about the rec center.
“Most people still don’t know about the rec center or SHARE Club. It’s like word of mouth. Our goal is to bring in new members, but we want people to make 2017 a year they develop a better lifestyle. We want people to know what’s happening in their community,” Short said.
No reservation is required.
