A 7-year-old child sustained life-threatening injuries in a Cape Coral crash Tuesday evening.

Cape Coral police reported that Jacqueline L. Maurer, 52, of the Cape, was driving a Hyundai Sonata westbound on Pine Island Road and approaching Skyline Boulevard in the southbound turn lane. At 6:57 p.m., she tried to turn onto Skyline, driving directly into the path of a vehicle heading eastbound.

The other vehicle, a BMW 530i, was changing lanes into the outside lane on Pine Island Road.

Police reported that the front of the BMW struck the passenger side of the Hyundai, T-boning it. The Hyundai was forced to the southeast, stopping in a ditch. The BMW came to a rest in the outside lane.

The passenger in the Hyundai, a 7-year-old boy, was in a child seat. He sustained a life-threatening head injury and was trauma-alerted to a local hospital, before being airlifted to a Tampa Bay hospital.

As of Wednesday, the child’s identity and condition were unknown.

Police reported that Maurer had minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she was later released. The driver and passenger in the BMW had minor injuries, but refused medical attention.

An investigation is being conducted.

Police reported that the crash is not alcohol or drug related.
