FDLE identifies man arrested in police shooting

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has confirmed the name of the person arrested in connection with Sunday’s shooting incident.
Jon Webster Hay, 49, of 1476 Sandcastle Road, was booked into the Lee County Jail at 5:32 this morning on a charge of attempted homicide (murder first degree premeditated.)

The Sanibel police officer who was shot by a passing motorist while completing a traffic citation near 2300 Periwinkle Way shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday has been released from the hospital after treatment for his injuries. The person who shot him was arrested at his home after a shootout with police, officials said. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The Sanibel Police Department has issued an all clear for the Dunes neighborhood. The suspect police say shot and injured a Sanibel police officer during a routine traffic stop has been apprehended and is in custody.
Sanibel traffic will remain impacted as the Police Department works three separate crime scenes related to this incident.

The Sanibel Causeway and Periwinkle Road have been closed after a Sanibel police officer was shot during a routine traffic stop and the suspected gunman exchanged gunfire with other officers responding to assist.
The injured officer is being treated at Lee Memorial Hospital.
The suspect, who fed on foot, was located in the Dunes neighborhood shortly after the 8 p.m. incident and exchanged gunfire with Sanibel police in the 1400 block of Sandcastle Road, officials said in a 911 statement issued at 9 p.m.
The department has warned residents to lock their doors, stay away from windows and remain inside until an all-clear is issued.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is also responding.
