CC Parkway median work begins Monday

Motorists and shoppers in South Cape can expect some delays in traffic patterns on Cape Coral Parkway between Coronado Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard beginning Monday as the long-awaited median beautification project gets under way.

“People can expect some lane closures during the project as crews work each median section,” said CRA coordinator Terri Hall. “Work will be done in the daytime, but they will work the closures outside rush hour traffic.”

On weekdays, eastbound lanes will remain open between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and westbound lanes will remain open after 3:30 p.m. Only the inside lanes next to the median are subject to the periodic closures.

City contractor, King Sod and Landscaping, will start by removing existing landscaping, install electrical conduit for future tree lighting, and reposition the irrigation system as needed. New sod, plants, trees, palm trees, shrubs and mulch are all part of the $188,493 project that is being funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency.

Crews are expected to finish a median section before moving on to the next one.

A number of canopy trees that were diseased or dying were removed a few months ago at city expense. The canopy trees that still exist in the median will remain.

“They are trying to complete the project by early December,” said Hall. “Then comes installation of the lighting.”

City Council approved an additional $75,000 for the future lighting components which will include LED bulbs and fixtures.

“International lighting will be used for the trees, kind of like Christmas lights,” said Hall.
