Pokemon Crawl: Unique event comes to Cape Saturday
Explore the South Cape in a new way – and get free and discounted stuff – on Saturday.
Hosted by the South Cape Hospitality and Entertainment Associations, the first-ever South Cape Pokemon Go All Day Crawl will be held from 7 a.m. to midnight. As participants walk the area trying to catch Pokemon, they will be eligible for a mix of specials being offered by over 30 businesses.
“Pokemon Go is crazy popular right now,” Pamela Hazelton, a spokeswoman for the South Cape Hospitality and Entertainment Associations, said. “And we wanted to do something different.”
She noted that many of the group’s events are 21 and over. This crawl is open to all ages.
Hazelton added that unlike other area crawls, which simply brought Pokemon Go players together in parks and nightlife areas, the South Cape crawl will focus on the South Cape experience, as well.
“From this, people are going to be walking throughout all of the South Cape,” she said.
Thirty-three businesses are involved by offering specials, discounts and freebies to participants. The specials are affordable – priced at $2.50 or less – while others are simply handing out freebies.
Many of the deals are Pokemon Go-themed.
For example, there are Pokemon Go T-shirts, cake pops, charm bracelets and decals.
“All of the bars are doing speciality drinks,” Hazelton said.
There are discounts on painting classes, bread purchases, pet services and more.
“Based on all the feedback that we’ve received, we’re anticipating 1,000 people are going to be in South Cape Coral that day,” she said.
Wristbands are $5 and can be bought in advance or day of.
For advance wristbands, visit one of the participating locations that are selling them. For the list of businesses that have them, visit the “South Cape Pokemon Go Crawl” event page on Facebook.
The day of the event, booths will be set up in Big John’s plaza and at Cruiser’s Lounge.
Hazelton noted that a limited number of collectible wristbands are available.
“There are only 1,000 of the collectible ones,” she said, adding that once the Pokemon Go collectible wristbands are sold out, participants will be given traditional event wristbands to wear.
During the crawl, three charging stations will be set up with power strips.
“So you can actually charge your device,” Hazelton said.
However, officials suggest carrying an extra battery.
Two charging stations will be at Cruiser’s and BackStreets Sports Bar; they are only open to 21 and older. For those under 21, the third station will be located at the Cape Coral Brewing Company.
“Please dress comfortable. You’re going to be walking a lot,” she said.
“Drink plenty of water,” Hazelton added.
