Cape man guilty in 2013 shooting death of wife
A Cape Coral man has been convicted of shooting and killing his wife nearly three years ago.
On Thursday, a panel of jurors found Michael George Young Jr., 49, of 2918 S.W. First Place, guilty of one count of second-degree murder with a firearm in the Dec. 14, 2013, death of Sally A. Young, 49.
The trial started on Monday and lasted four days before the jury began deliberations.
“The jury deliberated for 25 minutes,” Samantha Syoen, with the State Attorney’s Office, said.
Young’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 11 a.m.
“It was a just verdict, and we hope it brings some closure to the family,” she said.
Defense attorney Edward Kelly represented Young in the case.
He said his client is facing a life sentence, but he declined to talk about the specifics of the case.
“We’re going to appeal it,” Kelly said.
Assistant State Attorneys Bob Lee and Hanna Renna prosecuted the case.
At about 11:18 p.m. Dec. 14, 2013, Cape police responded to reports of multiple shots fired at 2918 S.W. First Place. About two minutes later, a second caller contacted authorities and reported shots fired.
Officers were advised that one person was shot and another person possibly shot his or herself.
Young had fatally shot his wife outside of their home with a shotgun.
He then attempted to commit suicide with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Young was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition, officials reported at the time. When he was released from the hospital days later, he was taken into police custody and charged.
According to officials, the couple’s son, 9, was present for the shooting but was unharmed.
