A Cape Coral bicyclist remains hospitalized after colliding with a vehicle earlier this week.

Damian Robert Willard, 22, was listed in good condition on Friday at Lee Memorial Health System’s Rehabilitation Hospital, where he was transported on Tuesday after the accident, officials reported.

According to the Cape police, Willard was riding northbound on Chiquita Boulevard South in the outside lane and approaching Southwest Pine Island Road at about 6:44 a.m. He began to cross Pine Island Road with a green light, however, the signal changed to red after he entered the intersection.

Police reported that the light for the westbound traffic on Pine Island Road changed to green and a Toyota Tundra that had been waiting at the signal began to move forward into the intersection.

The front left portion of the Toyota collided with the bicycle.

Willard was knocked off of the bicycle and he came to rest on the roadway, according to police. The bicycle came to rest under the front bumper of the Toyota. Willard was not wearing a helmet.

Police reported that Willard’s injuries were not initially thought to be life-threatening, however, in the ambulance his condition worsened. He was then trauma-alerted to the hospital with a head injury.

The driver of the Toyota, Emilus Victor, 57, of Naples, was not injured in the crash.

The accident is not alcohol or drug related, according to police.
