Name of shooter who killed two before being shot by police released

Cape Coral police have released the name of the man they say shot two people dead before dying in an armed confrontation with police Sunday night.

Detectives have identified the shooter as Christopher Michael Moran, 31, of 901 S.E. 8th Terrace No. 6.

No other information, including the names of the deceased shooting victims or the names of three others wounded in a rampage that began when the gunman shot and killed a motorcyclist before moving on to a convenience store where he again opened fire, was released.

The investigation remains on-going and police are still in the process of making sure families have been notified, CCPD spokesperson Dana Coston said late Monday.

“As you know, yesterday afternoon, Cape Coral experienced a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of two people and the injury of three others as the result of the heinous actions of a gunman; a gunman who was only stopped by the courageous actions of several members of the Cape Coral Police Department,” Coston said.

“Your Police Department is working this case tirelessly, collecting evidence, conducting interviews, and processing the three crime scenes. Part of the work following such tragic events is to make proper notification to the next of kin and provide the survivors services and assistance through our Victim Assistance Unit. This is currently underway. Sometimes relatives are identified and located in the area and this work is fairly quick. Other times, relatives can be harder to locate and may not be in the area.”

Once these notifications are made, additional information will be released, he said.

Meanwhile, Coston asked the public and the media not to engage in speculation as the facts are gathered.

The multi-location incident began at about 5:45 p.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of Skyline Boulevard when a gunman, now identified as Moran, shot and killed a motorcyclist.

Less than an hour later, at 6:28, Moran then shot two more people, one fatally, at the Circle K at Chiquita and Cape Coral Parkway, then fled.

Within four minutes, responding officers encountered the vehicle he was driving at the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and the parkway. The car was stopped near the 5100 block of Skyline and Moran, who officials say was still armed, “violently resisted” and was shot dead by police.

Two passengers in the car were injured. They were transported to the hospital were they were treated Sunday night. Their conditions could not be determined Monday.

No officers were hurt.

Original story:

Three people are dead and three are being treated for injuries after a gunman shot three people before being shot and killed by police Sunday night.

The multi-location incident began at about 5:45 p.m. in the 2600 block of Skyline Boulevard when a gunman shot and killed a motorcyclist, said police spokesperson Det. Sgt. Dana Coston at a press conference called in the wake of shootings.

Less than an hour later, at 6:28, the same person shot two people, one fatally, at the Circle K at Chiquita and Cape Coral Parkway, then fled, Coston said.

Within four minutes, responding officers encountered the vehicle at the intersection of Skyline Boulevard and the parkway. The car was stopped near the 5100 block of Skyline and the suspect, who officials say was still armed, “violently resisted” and was shot dead by police.

Two passengers in the car were injured. They were transported to the hospital were they were being treated Sunday night, Coston said.

No officers were hurt.

It is still early in the investigation and no other details could be released, Coston said, including the names or ages of those deceased or those injured, the type of gun or guns used by the shooter, or how many officers were involved in the takedown.

“All of that is going to be part of the ongoing investigation,” he said.

Coston was able to confirm that the three incidents were related as the suspect was present at all three locations but added police are still investigating how they were linked, a process expected to continue through the night and into Monday.

He praised police personnel, saying an active shooting “is an all hands on deck” situation where every officer available responds as quickly as possible.

Despite the “very tragic set of circumstances,” responding personnel were able to contain the situation just a mile from the second shooting scene, preventing possible additional violence, Coston said.

“They were fortunately in the right place at the right time,” he said.

Additional information will be released as it become available.
