Council agenda: Bar hours, capital projects to be discussed
City Council members will discuss capital projects prioritization and reconsidering extended bar hours on weekends in South Cape at a special workshop meeting at 3 p.m. Friday at the Nicholas Annex building.
They follow that up with Monday’s final regular meeting in Council Chambers before the summer hiatus that lasts through July 15. Regular Monday meetings resume on July 18.
Capital projects up for discussion include a canopy over the starting area at the BMX Track, upgrades to Cultural Park Theater, Festival Park, the vacant former golf course property in South Cape, parking garages in South Cape and at Cape Coral Hospital, and other parks amenities.
The city’s current asset management and capital improvement plan is budgeted through 2021. The six-year funding is projected to top $607 million.
Councilmember Richard Leon is seeking a consensus among his colleagues on whether to pursue a permanent ordinance regarding extended bar hours in downtown Cape Coral. The one-year experimental ordinance was defeated by council vote in February.
Meeting as the Community Redevelopment Agency Commission at 3:30 p.m. Monday prior to the regular council meeting, members are expected to approve the agency’s 2017 budget for a proposed $3.2 million.
Council will decide the fate of two ordinance amendments at Monday’s regular meeting. One seeks a change in zoning at Tarpon Point associated with the construction of the conference center at the Westin Resort.
The other would revisits an agreement with Lamar Company to use city owned or controlled property at Cape Coral Parkway and Veterans Parkway to design, construct and maintain electronic digital billboards.
Council also will discuss a salary increase for City Manager John Szerlag after postponing the discussion at last week’s meeting. It has been proposed to extend Szerlag a 5 percent increase in line with other city employees, but some on council thought they needed more information before voting.
The city’s Budget Review Committee also is scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Monday at City Hall
