Two Cape Coral residents were injured in a traffic crash that left one person dead earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Clifford Oliveira, 64, was driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla westbound on state Route 82 and approaching the intersection at Columbus Boulevard. Elizabeth Oliveira, 63, was riding in the vehicle.

At 8:50 p.m., a 1995 Toyota Corolla traveling southbound on Columbus failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and entered the path of Oliveira’s Toyota, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The front of Oliveira’s vehicle struck the left side of the 1995 Toyota, which was being driven by Francisco J. Contreras, 45, of Immokalee. In the collision, Oliveira’s Toyota rotated and the rear of the vehicle struck the left rear of the 1995 Toyota. Contreras’ vehicle then rotated off of the roadway.

The FHP reported that Contreras’ Toyota came to an uncontrolled stop in a drainage ditch at the southeast corner of the intersection. It became partially submerged in water that was in the ditch.

Oliveira’s vehicle came to a stop in the eastbound lane of SR 82.

Contreras sustained fatal injuries in the crash, according to the FHP. Two passengers in his vehicle, Tonya Parnell, 28, and Marcus Green, 1, both of Immokalee, sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Parnell and Marcus were transported to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Clifford Oliveira and Elizabeth Oliveira also sustained minor injuries during the crash. The FHP reported that the Cape residents were also taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

As of Wednesday, all four patients had been discharged from the hospital, officials reported.

SR 82 was closed Tuesday in both directions for four hours due to the accident.
