A pedestrian remained hospitalized Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle in Cape Coral.

Ronald James Sears, 42, of Fort Myers, was listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was taken Monday following the accident on Diplomat Parkway, officials reported.

At about 1:13 a.m., Sears was walking eastbound on Diplomat, according to the Cape police. In the 2200 block, the front right of a Jeep SUV that was westbound in the outside lane struck Sears head on. The driver, Danielle Rene Tuohey, 27, of the Cape, fled the scene without stopping after the impact, officials said.

Sears sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash and was trauma-alerted to the hospital.

Police reported that approximately an hour after the accident, Tuohey and the Jeep returned to the scene. Tuohey provided officers with a statement, and the vehicle was seized for evidence.

The crash is not alcohol or drug related, according to officials.

Due to the nature of the accident, criminal charges are pending completion of an investigation.

The crash closed down both westbound lanes of Diplomat for about two hours.
