Shell Factory to celebrate Memorial Day with barbecue

2 min read

It’s sure to be just like that old family barbecue your mom and dad used to have, only with a zip line.

The Shell Factory is inviting all local families as it will host its own Old Fashioned Family BBQ on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will feature live entertainment, including a barber shop quartet and a DJ doing karaoke, a holiday barbecue menu and other cool activities and discounts.

The barbecue will feature kite flying all day, sack races, three-legged races, a watermelon eating contest, miniature golf tournament, crab races, bumper boat games and a bike decoration contest for children 10 and under.

The event will also feature two-for-one admission to the nature park, a special family fun park package, and 10 percent off at the beach shack.

Rick Tupper, Shell Factory marketing director, said this is yet one more example of how the business is evolving into a family destination.

“We just keep moving forward. April was an outstanding month. Revenues year-to-date are up 11 percent and over 20 percent at the nature park,” Tupper said. “I really think this will be a lot of fun for the kids.”

Tupper said he is trying to get a local American Legion post to come so the event also can honor veterans, but that has not been confirmed.

The main attraction of the event will be the grand opening of its Soaring Eagle Zip Line, which the Shell Factory hopes will draw large crowds.

The cost to ride the zip line is $8.50, which the Shell Factory touts as “cheaper than a movie.” Assuming it passes inspection, the attraction is expected to be open in time for the event.

Also making its debut will be the Soaring Eagle Cafe, where you can grab a beverage or snack.

“We’re really excited about it, and we anticipate people riding it over and over,” Tupper said. “At the cafe, you can watch your family ride.”
