Oasis JROTC to serve homeless vets
About 250 homeless veterans are being invited to a special dinner and evening of entertainment courtesy of the Junior ROTC program at Oasis High School.
The “Shark Battalion” cadets have received considerable support from Oasis staff and students in raising funds for the service learning project for the Class of 2014.
Students have volunteered to help the cadets raise money through car washes and bake sales in addition to donations they have received from local businesses and organizations.
“We are still visiting businesses around town asking for donations and we have two more car washes to do, too,” said Cadet Second Lt. Amanda Ugarte, the Officer in Charge. “This is the first year for this project, but we want to continue it as a tradition and make it better each year.”
The sit-down dinner is planned for Friday, May 16, at the Carrie D. Robinson Community Center in Fort Myers. The veterans will be entertained and hear messages from several guest speakers.
The 17 JROTC cadets already have distributed more than half of their invitations with the help of local veterans service organizations in Lee County.
